NPR’s Fresh Air interviews journalist A.C.Thompson on white supremacist movements a year after Charlottesville, including the “Rise Above” movement, a post-skinhead group that uses subtler methods to organize violence against anti-racist demonstrators. Thompson reports also that Portland may be the next Charlottesville, and the best way to deflate the neo-nazi movement may be not to engage them. Look forward to the Frontline episode on Tuesday…
And for those who find the ‘alt-right’ brand of neo-nazism passe, the conspiracy cult QAnon is making the scene in Tampa, laden with fever dreams of Making America Goofy Again. Theories cooked up in the funky basement of internet forums attempt to divine ‘the truth’ from whatever pablum dribbles from their leader’s lips. Only in this case their leader holds the highest office in the land.
Whether hunting for nonexistent pizza parlor pedophiles or denying the slaughter of actual schoolchildren, the writer begs the question, is it nature or nurture that is fueling these kooks?
The outbreak of cults comes as no surprise: The market for outlandish ideas is booming, with professional propaganda outlets like Breitbart and Fox News leading the charge. The rise of splinter groups only proves that healthcare and public education are in critical need — as mental illness goes unchecked, and ignorance metastasizes into derangement, systemic reforms won at the ballot box will be the only remedy.
